Since last year, we’ve been reporting the possibility of an Android 2.4 stock coinciding with the Android 2.3 (gingerbread) and Android 3.0 (honeycomb). As much as some fans want to see it arrive as another major update for Android, the fact is, it won’t! And it will still be called as Gingerbread contrary to popular belief that it will be named as “Ice-Cream”. For those keen observers, this will come as an interesting news because that rumor-mill about an Ice-Cream version for Android landing this summer is still quite plausible as of the moment.

Anyway, the reason why there’s another buzz for the Android 2.4 is because of the blogosphere reporting this platform will be presented running on Viewsonic’s Viewpad 4 which is expected to launch on April. If this leak comes as a reality, it should follow that the release date for Android 2.4 would arrive on April as well.
As for its features, it will ensure those dual-core apps made for Honeycomb would still work for Gingerbread – that’s why the development of this 2.4 stock. It also means it won’t be long until majority of Android smartphones using 2.3 will have an upgrade to 2.4 to avoid this compatibility issues with Honeycomb applications.
Anyway, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the existence of Android 2.4 on an Android device. Actually, we’ve even seen it running on a prototype Xperia Arc last month in which one of its PR guys just merely used its “plausible deniability” technique again claiming it was just a mistake. Well folks, at least now you know that Android 2.4 is not a mistake!
