ASUS dares to bring a new twist in netbook design with its latest ASUS Eee PC 1001PX with seashell/clamshell design. It has a lot of similarities with the previous ASUS Eee PC 1001P which by the way didn’t meet our expectations. Let’s see the pros and cons of the new 1001PX design and discover if the “X” can bring a lot of difference.
The latest 1001PX has a starting price of $279 which is way lower than the previous 1001P ($384) netbook design. A good start! The two has similar “seashell” casing design and layout except for the carbon-fiber like details made on the 1001PX. We now proceed under the hood with the new PX design sporting the new Intel Atom N450, 1GB/2GB RAM, 2.5” 160GB/250GB SATA2 Hard drive, 10.1inch LED backlight WSVGA Non-Glare screen with 1024×600 resolution, 0.3 MP camera, bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 9 hours of battery life with the new ASUS superhybrid engine technology that gives optimal power-efficiency to ASUS mobile gadgets.
If we compare the functionalities of 1001P with 1001PX design it is clear that the latter has packed a lot of upgrades under the hood. We also appreciate the ergonomic designed keyboard on the PX with multi-touch touchpad allowing pinch-to-zoom and rotate functions. The Eee docking software suite also promises a lot in terms of accessibility and sharing of digital contents inside your netbook. There are 4 major functions Eee docking suite offers namely ASUS @ vibe, Eee Sharing, Eee Xperience and Eee Tools. With this software interface, ASUS promises to make life easier for people who loves to share multimedia file contents with their friends and family. More spec data can be seen after the cut.
Additional support and file downloads for the new ASUS Eee PC 1001PX can be seen at ASUS’ website such as BIOS utilities, Chipset, LAN, Touchpad, Wireless Support and HDD. Downloads are available in several platform such as DOS, XP and Windows 7.
The starting package only covers the Windows XP OS but you can upgrade to Windows 7 by adding 20USD bringing the total to $279. Still, it is better compare with the supposedly “budget” 1001P netbook. For those who are interested the new ASUS Eee PC 1001PX will be available in the US by May.
