With the release of laptops weekly, we must be able to discern which is worth the penny and which is not. For today, we’ll be putting the Asus U31GJ-A1 under the spotlight for scrutinizing.

First off, let’s start with the design. In retrospect, Asus’ laptop carries well with its size and weight, as complemented by its simple yet elegant glossy two-tone colour scheme casing. The downside? The keyboard can be flexed quite easily, not saying much for durability. Though it is capable of 7 hours of battery life, the audio from the speakers are just terrible. Well if you’re looking for something long-lasting, you can just turn the mute button on.
To provide you with a brief overview of the specs, read on:
- 13.3-inch 720p (1366×768) display with LED backlighting
- 4GB DDR3-1066 dual-channel RAM (2x 2GB)
- 500GB 5400RPM Seagate hard drive (ST9500325AS)
- Intel Core i3-380M dual-core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L2, 4.8GT/s QPI, 35W TDP)
- Intel HM55 chipset
- Integrated Intel HD graphics
- Nvidia GeForce GT 415M 1GB
The standard system performance is satisfactory, but the graphical performance isn’t to die for. Lastly, the price is not really reasonable. For a half decent laptop like the Asus U31GJ-A1, you would have to shell out $849. Considering the laptop’s specs, it seems Asus has gotten way ahead of themselves on this one.
To summarize, the function and support of the software, as well as upgrade capabilities are interesting. Considering all else, it’s not very promising. Perhaps you can scout for better deals at a more reasonable rate.
