Bow you heads down and give grace to the World’s Fastest Video Card – ATI Radeon 5970.
At first, we thought our eyes were fooling us when we read Radeon mothered the fastest graphics card but it was official! Even boys from Engadget confirms this one. See the excerpt from AMD’s press release today.
AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the flagship installment in the award-winning line of graphics cards, the ATI Radeon™ HD 5970, the fastest card ever created. The new ultra high-end model joins a growing list of the world’s first and only graphics cards to fully support Microsoft DirectX® 11 technology and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology.
Fast backwarding to the “oh so many times” Nvidia beat the benchmark of Radeon HD cards – making it look like the cheaper alternative, this product release was truly remarkable. It seems to me that whenever Radeon releases something, Nvidia is always a step ahead – Although the price of Nvidia cards has always been more expensive.
Today, the trend changes.

So let’s take a peek with new card now, shall we?
- Seeing the big-guns of 5970 was already exhilarating. Dual GPUs giving you a total of 4.3 Billion *40nm* transistors made possible using AMD’s CYPRESS technology.
- Comes with a 725 MHz engine processor – Can be overclocked to give you that ultimate jaw-droping gaming experience.
- Processing power (single precision): 4.64 TeraFLOPS. Can go as high as 10 Tera flops when crossfired with another 5970 card.
- 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM: It wouldn’t be the fastest if it will not use the latest GDDR technology, right?
- DirectX 11 support – Gives you Pixel Shader 5.0 (Hard core gamers will surely love this one!)
- Infused with ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology – Gone are the days of the single display for your screens, Eyefinity gives you the control for three displays simultaneously with independent resolutions, refresh rates, color controls, and video overlays. So this mean it can drive the display of your monitor to an insane 7680×1600 maximum resolution. Are we talking to a 90-inch LCD screen capability? Or will it be handling 3 different sets of screen, driving an array of monitors on a single platform? Whatever the case may be, both sounds good to me
Maybe this video will help you understand more about Eyefinity – Keep in mind that this is just the ATI 5870. Behold the Trio-screen technology!
- Oh btw, to uncage this beast you need to shell-out 599 USD. So better keep that cash coming ‘coz half a grand ain’t so easy to make, unless your “Richie Rich”.

Now its time to see some of the benchmarks made by geeks, I mean heroes of Tomshardware. (click the pictures to enlarge)
Crysis and finishing off with the world’s most expensive game: Grand Theft Auto IV.
Bonus: benchmarking video from techwap [HD]
Please keep in mind that this beast runs with a maximum board power 294 Watts and idle board power of 51 Watts, may we suggest that you try to invest on your Power Supply with at least 650 Watts just in case you want to upgrade your rig with this card.
Now speaking about, if the price of Radeon 5970 is really cost:efficient? I have this two excerpts that may give basis for your judgment.
Tomshardware: What about ATI versus Nvidia? The Radeon HD 5970 is faster than the GeForce GTX 295, but it’s also $100 more expensive. Take a look at the benchmarks, judge whether the extra performance/DirectX 11/Eyefinity outweigh $100 savings/PhysX/GeForce 3D Vision, and make your decision accordingly. Just think twice before buying a pair of GeForce GTX 285s. At $370 a piece, the Radeon HD 5970 is faster, cheaper, and arguably more feature-complete than the SLI-based configuration.
Anandtech: When AMD originally told us about this card, I was surprised to see that they slapped only a $600 price tag on it. As the fastest of the fast cards, AMD can basically charge up to 2x the price of a 5870 for it, and they didn’t. After seeing the performance data, I understand why. In our benchmarks the 5970 is practically tied with the 5850CF, and a pair of such cards would sell for $600 at this time. I still expect that we’re going to see a performance gap emerge between the cards (particularly if the 5970 is held back by drivers) but right now the $600 price tag is appropriate.
Trivia: If you’re an Nvidia Fan and already crying why your favorite company has not released any new video card to battle out with Radeon 5970? Keep your hopes up – Nvidia provided a screenshot that you may want to see.

Here’s a twitted picture coming from Brian Burke (Nvidia, PR) about FERMI-based gpx card, Burke called GeForce 100. The PR guy also stated, it’s running the “Unigine Heaven” DX11.
