AT&T VS Verizon: There’s a misinterpretation for that

Posted on 15 November 2009 by pinoytutorial

The following article may be a little bit biased with the AT&T’s side, although it doesn’t mean its our opinion to side with AT&T but for the benefit of our readers we will show you the two sides of each company and give you the chance to determine which is which. Later, we will make an article explaining the side of Verizon.

As we have said on Verizon’s “There’s a Map for that Hoax?”, Verizon company poked at AT&T 3G coverage by saying they offer as much as 5 times 3G coverage than the latter. AT&T replied not with the same type of aggressive ads but guess what? They filed a lawsuit! This week, there was an official statement from AT&T on what grounds they were suing Verizon. It took us sometime to gather sources, so listen up guys this is a bit long. Please read AT&T Sets the Record Straight on Verizon Ads

Now that’s the side of AT&T. Come to think of it, don’t you think AT&T throw a rationalization on that statement without backing it with valid facts first?

  • Mainly by stating AT&T offers the most popular smartphones in the industry – Why, because iPhone was their trumph card for the past 2 years? Is that enough to say, they own the service for the popular smartphones in the “industry” ? Who’s industry was that – The world? They should have made a tally-sheet to explain this assertation more accurately.

Now here’s another enchilada made by Appleinsider, mincing the facts on what part really Did Verizon made a misleading statement to the viewers.

We summarize the statement of Appleinsider for you, but if you want the whole package just click the link.

If you will look at the history of Verizon:

  • Earlier in the decade, Verizon has CDMA 1xRTT (A very slow service, only provides dialup speed access)
  • On 2003, Verizon used “EVDO Rev A” as its 3G service enhancement (speed relatively slow)
  • By mid 2007, Verizon announced that its entire data network had been migrated over to the faster 3G technology (speed 06 to 1.4 Mbit) (They didn’t name that migration if it was still EVDO REV A or a new one)

If you will look at the history of AT&T:

  • During the Verizon’s CDMA 1xRTT escapade, AT&T was building out GPRS, the similarly slow, dialup speed data alternative. However, AT&T also began deploying EDGE, a “2.5G” service enhancement that supplies typical download speeds of around 0.4 Mbit, approaching the low end of Verizon’s EVDO Rev A 3G. (You can say it’s at par with Verizon’s “3G” service)
  • In 2005, AT&T began rolling out its first true UMTS 3G service, which enabled data service of up to 3.6 Mbit, significantly faster than Verizon’s EVDOs .

Now, come to think of it, it seems Verizon used this historical setting to say AT&T covers less 3G coverage in USA. Technically, that will be the case if they will compare ALL of Verizon’s EVDO’s 3G History (2003-2007) VS. just the faster 3G version of Apple on 2005 (not including Edge 2.5G – released earlier this decade)

However, If you will put the EDGE “2.5 G” in the picture (which is approaching the low end of Verizon’s EVDO Rev A 3G) The “there’s a map for that ads” will be highly-inaccurate.

If you are reading this you might got this question spinning on your head, “Why should AT&T Bring the “Edge 2.5G” in the picture, well in-fact the there’s map for that ads are only talking about “3G” only?”

Nice question, actually there’s a reason why EDGE 2.5 should be calculated on the scenario. Coming from the statement above, Edge 2.5 aproaches the speed of Verizon’s EVDO Rev A 2007 upgrade a.k.a Verizon’s 3G (only falling short to 0.2 Mbits at the minimum speed of EvDo Rev A) If the name of the game is “who is faster” then there’s a chance that EDGE 2.5 should be put in the list, however Verizon may got a shot on this one especially if their attorney’s are “very” good and will explain details why Zedge should not be counted. Without including Edge 2.5 plus some WiFi acces points, Verizon Wireless beat the heck out of AT&T.. BUT, voila! If you will add the Edge on the picture you can see that AT&T made the MAP of USA bluish.

Appleinsider also manages to distinguish how Verizon again misleads people to say “five times more” 3G maps and comparisons relate only to surface area in square miles, not to the percentage of coverage of actual population centers.

Wrap-up:

“Nobody knows nothing” that ill-grammar saying proves a lot. One could say AT&T may have the upperhand and has the reason to file a lawsuit, but if you will see how AT&T’s quality of service plummets a little bit on US this past few year, an experienced user may say AT&T shouldn’t have filed a lawsuit; Instead just replied with ala kanye west style outburst.

Yo Imma tell you… Your, There’s a map for that ads may be accurate in someway but still we have the best quality of service of all time!”  Then, start  improving their service more so the aggressor (Verizon) will have no choice but to shut-up.

*Case Closed* Ayt? But I guess, people from AT&T are very serious for this scenario and they are willing to take this to the court. I supposed this is the part where I’ll leave this case for your own deciding now, so what do you think?

Updates (Nov 17, 2009): As you can see this post is based on the points of AT&T. We prepared an article to explain the side of Verizon and I must say both are pretty damn good. It will be up to the judges now to decide if the TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) of AT&T against Verizon be approved or dismissed. WOW, the truth hurts AT&T so they sue, feeding us with more irrelevant information to confuse the truth.

FACT: Verizon’s adds talk about 3G data coverage and 3G data coverage only. It makes no clam that 3G is the only data network.
    FACT: EDGE is NOT 3G
FACT: Since 2007 100% of Verizon’s network has been 3G
FACT: VERIZON has approximately 5X the 3G (EVDO-A) coverage that AT&T’s 3G (HSPA)

There is nothing inaccurate here, except AT&T trying to confuse the facts.

Sure Verizon can stop airing these adds as long as AT&T stops their “More Bars in More Places (based upon global coverage”) since they have apparently conceded that the average consumer is stupid and can’t read.
