When we hear Google, the first thing that comes into mind is that it’s the best search engine on the web that almost everyone uses. However, as time passes and as tides changes, people’s choice or preference for search engine also comes to change.

Such is the effect of Bing (Microsoft powered) to America’s leading search engine, Google, in the past six months as the former seems to be showing a good trend. If the competition is to be plotted on a graph, Bing’s trend line is steadily increasing while Google’s trend line is slightly diminishing (see chart below). Word is that if this continues, Bing might overtake Google in the next year.

According to Experian Hitwise, Google still has a 64.42 percent share in terms of searches in the US, however, Bing is slightly gaining ground as it has already hit the 30 percent mark of searches in the US (as of March 2011). Bing’s increase is deemed significant because records of Experian Hitwise show that the company had a tremendous growth for searches.

So why is Bing catching up with Google? This can be attributed to the success that users get from Bing powered searches in both yahoo (81.14 percent) and bing.com (80.32 percent) as users click on a “search result” and visit the website. For Google’s part, this has only yielded a 65.91 percent success rate.
Google though still has domination and control over the search engine market however the company should be cautious and shouldn’t be complacent enough.
