Cartoons have been very popular lately especially in various social networking sites such as Facebook. Most often than not, those people who not want to expose their personal photos often make used of their favorite cartoon character as profile picture. Well, it seems that most Facebook users and all other social networking sites are beginning to change their profile pictures to the images of their childhood favorite cartoon character and enjoying it just like walking down the memory lane.

Some of the most commonly used cartoon characters are the images of Flinstones, Smurfs, Thundercats, Hello Kitty, and a lot more. And according to the website “Know Your Meme,” this trend started with Facbook users from Greece and Cyprus back in mid-November.
And because of this trend, the Cartoon Network created a Facebook event page entitled “Choose a Cartoon Character as Your Profile Picture for a Week” that took place last November 21st to November 28th, 2010. The main purpose of this event is to encourage more Facebook users to remove all human photos for a few days from Facebook. The use of cartoon avatars as profile picture may be seen as a common pattern lately and has turned into an international ad hoc campaign that is intended to raise the awareness for those children who are suffering from child abuse.

And it seems that a lot of Facebook users have responded to this ad hoc campaign and as a matter of fact, the said Facebook group page has been “liked” by more than 10,000 people already. There is another Facebook page with the similar campaign that has been also “liked” by more than 12,000 Facebook users as well.
Previously if you can still remember, Facebook memes have encouraged users to replace their profile pictures with various images of their favorite celebrity doppelgangers and also had women post the colors of their bras in order to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Well, it seems that Facebook is not only a social networking site that is intended to communicate with our loved-ones and friends, but also an effective means of campaigning against various ideals such as child abuse and breast cancer. We can say that the latest ad hoc campaign is pretty successful given the fact that a lot of Facebook users have changed their profile pics to their favorite cartoon characters.
