Just recently Google held a very special event at the Googleplex in Mountain View California to give details about the company’s upcoming Chrome OS. Google’s VP for Product Management Sundar Pichai and Google’s Engineering Director for the Chrome OS project Matthew Papakipos were the designated speakers during the said event. After discussing the details of the upcoming Chrome OS, a Q&A session was also held afterwards. (Check out the video clip below)

During the said event, Google has promised that the Chrome OS will be ready for its launch by the end of this year, most probably before the holiday season. However, there were some gadget websites referring to November 11 as the possible date for the launching of this upcoming OS.

The Chrome OS is now on version 0.9.78.1, and this version number is expected to become 1.0 upon its launch. The Chrome OS was first announced by Google in June 2009 followed by a demonstration in November of the same year. Basically, the Chrome OS is an operating system that offers a modified Chrome web browser, has no installed programs and comes with a minimal internal storage capacity. It was especially designed for netbooks, but also believes to have a potential to effectively work with notebooks, desktops and tablets as well.
This upcoming Chrome OS seems to face a very challenging situation especially with the rapid growth of the Android OS. The Chrome OS will surely have a chance, but for sure it will be quite difficult. Google seems to face the challenge of being able to create an exciting app ecosystem for the Chrome OS and at the same time release a hardware that is faster, cheaper and more secure than any Windows notebook. In addition to that, Google is also coming up with the Chrome Web App Store, where a lot of downloadable third party applications will be available just like the Android Market for the Android OS.
It seems that Google’s Chrome OS has a great potential to shine. However, it will take some time before it can reach that status because of the presence of other OS especially the Android OS which continues to grow rapidly. For now, let us wait and see until the Chrome OS becomes available and see for ourselves what it has to offer.
