D-Wave One Quantum Computer: Specs and Price Will Set You Back for $10 Million

Posted on 20 May 2011 by pinoytutorial

Wise guys in the tech industry are currently developing the next frontier of computer technology. D-Wave, a Canadian quantum computing company, has recently announced its first commercially available Quantum Computer called D-Wave One. The machine is still in its elementary state compared with state of the art processors we have today. Though, it sure has a lot of potential.

Currently, D-Wave One can only be used in unison with conventional computers. Its processor, codenamed “Rainier”, is primarily used for single mathematical operation called discrete optimization. Regular type of programming and developing applications through a quantum system is very difficult to do right now. Instead, Rainier is used to solve optimization problems. It employs a process called “Quantum Annealing” which involves the use of quantum effects to get better solutions faster.

Quantum computing system uses a “qubit” (quantum bit) as its basic unit. It is different from the classical bit we regularly use. Unlike the bit which can only have either “0″ or “1″ state, the qubit can be 0, 1 or a superposition of both. According to D-Wave, quantum computers has a lot of potential like in the field of Artificial Intelligence, solving mathematical equations as well as verifying and validating complex systems.

As a matter of fact, it was reported that Google has been closely working with D-Wave to build a new image search algorithms based on D-Wave’s C4 Chimera Chip. For sure we will see more about quantum computing technology in the days to come.

And if you’re blown away by this information and wonder how much a quantum computer cost. Well, it’s currently standing at $10 Million!
