We cannot deny the fact that Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites nowadays. As a matter of fact it has reached more than 500 million active users and even continues to increase as the days go by. With the success of this social networking site, it would be also inevitable for other developers and programmers to come out with an equally successful application like Facebook.

And just recently after a release of an initial source code last September, a Facebook alternative in its alpha version called Diaspora was released. The website Mashable has managed to catch up some invites and has also put together a gallery in order to give an idea in how it really looks as of present.
Diaspora was an idea that started out from 4 university students that have experienced some privacy crisis with their Facebook accounts. Well, Facebook has been a recent target of some unscrupulous individuals who are trying to get some personal information from these social networking sites’ users for their personal gain.
Getting frustrated about Facebook’s privacy settings, this Diaspora team decided to try something different and created the idea of having a Facebook alternative called Diaspora. Using Kickstarter, this team has expected to gather around $ 10,000 pledge so that they can already start working on their project, but in the end they have raised more than $ 200,000.
And now the Diaspora is already on its early stage of development. Diaspora actually looks like any social networking site. But unlike Facebook, it has no ads, no distractions and not much activity of any kind. The interface itself is clean and simple. However, since it is only on its early stage of development, its incompleteness in some aspects is pretty disappointing.
The developers of Diaspora highly focus to making your data portable, encrypted and selective. Diaspora enables its users to download their data directly from their profile, download photos and close their account without the need to go through a lot of hassles as the Facebook do. However, the biggest feature of the Diaspora is known as “aspects.” Apparently, “aspects” are private so no one knows if a certain person is designated as a friend or not. It also gave some sort of restrictions on who can view or make comments on your messages or photos.
The Diaspora seems to take a long way before it will be finally available to the public since it is still in its alpha version. The Diaspora may be created with the right idea, but putting that idea into the Diaspora will be quite difficult and needs more time to be polished. So let us just wait and see if the Diaspora will be able to make it.
