With just $400,000 goal to develop a game base on the Tim Schafer and his creative team’s ideas and concepts, Double Fine Production got an astonishing feedback and support from consumers. Double Fine is on the process of making a new classic point-and-click adventure using today’s touch technology and they have decided to get funding from an unlikely source, the gamers and consumers themselves. They aligned themselves with Kickstarter, an online pledge platform which is ultimately designed to help gather monetary funding from the public.
Surprisingly even Schafer and his team did not expect the overwhelming response that the people gave towards their concept. In as little as eight hours the target had already been achieved and is now reached a record breaking pledge of $1,605,584 from 45,186 backers. Originally Schafer planned to allocate $300,000 to make the game and the remaining $100,000 for developing a documentary to be delivered to the game’s backers.
The extra funds gathered from backers will be used to ship the game in other platforms than just the PC which it was initially intended. The production group also said that the additional funding will also be used to add in more music and voice, the translation of the game into more languages and an original soundtrack for the documentary.
Double Fine Production also teamed up with 2 Player Production. Schafer put them in command of documenting the creative process and releasing a monthly video updates to the backers of the project. Double Fine is dedicated in making every step of the process of game development transparent. In fact a private online community will be available to the backers to discuss and give their comments and feedbacks on the game’s content and direction. This way the backers will have the chance to contribute to how the game will turn out.
Backers will also be given access to help test the game once the beta is available of a test run. Double Fine Production also assures the backers that they will be given a complete version of the game on the format of their choice.
