A new app called Drone Station is released to allow Parrot AR.Drone owners to operate the device via MacBook and iMac. Before this app, AR Drones can be controlled only by iOS device such as an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The new app uses wifi connection to control the AR Drone, but with an external USB Wi-Fi dongles and antennas, the range of the wifi can be extended up to 3X than the range of iPad and iPhone.

Drone Station gives an on screen HUD on a MacBook to display all the information needed to fly the Parrot quadrocopter accurately. The app is also compatible with other external controllers of Xbox, PS3, Logitech, Thrustmaster, and Wii.
The AR.Drone, which has cameras on board, is generally used for research and education. Controlling it using the MacBook will give a faster system to control the device. Furthermore, the app would allow users more storage for the pictures and videos taken using the AR.Drone cameras, which is automatically transferred to the MacBook hard drive.

The app requires at least Mac OS X 10.6.6 version or later, the Parrot AR.Drone device, 6.6 MB storage space and a third party driver if you prefer to use the Xbox 360 controller. The Drone Station app was released by Logic Consulting on December 21, 2011 and available on Mac App Store for download for $10. See the video below for more details.
