If you are a Star Wars fanatic, then here is some good news for you. Verizon has finally announced the much awaited arrival of the Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 in the market through verizonwireless.com and in selected Verizon Wireless Communication stores starting September 30, 2010.
Apparently, the Droid 2 R2-D2 is a limited edition phone that features a cover that was especially designed to remind us of the R2-D2 Droid from Star Wars. This upcoming smartphone will come with a Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headset and packaged in a custom box similar to carbonite. In addition to these abovementioned features, the Droid 2 R2-D2 also comes preloaded with R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones, live wallpapers, R2-D2 clock widget, Exclusive Binoculars App and “The Best of R2-D2” video that come with the original Cantina music.
The Star Wars mobile application will be also available to all customers with devices running the Android 2.1 or higher. This mobile app will basically include the following features:
- Bounty Haunt Visual ID which allows you to find and capture images from the Star Wars Universe and unlock hidden content
- Sound and photo gallery
- Exciting wallpapers such as Blast the Probe Droid, Luke Balancing Yoda, Navigating the Asteroid Field and Watch Bespin’s Cloud City
- Also comes with a Trivia Challenge where you can answer various trivia questions about The Empire Strikes Back
- Various widgets
This upcoming limited edition phone will be mers need to subscribe to a Nationwide Talk plan or Talk and available starting September 30 and offered at a price of $249 after a mail-in rebate of $100 and comes with a two-year contract. Verizon custoText plan which cost around $39.99 monthly and an E-mail and Web for smartphone plan for around $29.99 monthly fee. The mail-in rebate will be received by the customers in the form of a debit card which they may use anywhere debit cards are being accepted.
During the official launch of this smartphone on September 30, and a list of around 10 stores will apparently have some midnight events where Star Wars characters and free t-shirts and posters will be given to those customers who will buy any Droid smartphone.
Please take note that this is just a limited edition phone and according to some sources, only around 200 units will be available per store. However, the Droid 2 R2-D2 will also be available online. Star Wars as well as Android fans must be really excited about this upcoming phone.
