The Motorola Droid 2 has been considered as the direct successor of the original Motorola Droid and it will be released by America’s largest phone carrier, Verizon Wireless in September 30. Upon its launched, this handset became the center of attraction for many smartphone lovers in the US but not as popular as the Droid X or EVO 4G handset.
Basically the Droid 2 is an upgraded version of the Motorola Droid. And Verizon is actually planning to come out with a big new ad campaign and make it the first Droid model to be offered in a R2-D2 version. The Droid 2 may not be as appealing as the original Droid and obviously it has a lot of catching up to do since the original Droid is a blockbuster when it was released.
Let us try to check out what the Droid 2 has to offer:
Packaging wise, the Droid 2 comes with an impressively compact and much larger packaging that just big enough to accommodate a USB wall charger, micro-USB cable, user guide and your very own handset. The Droid 2 is appears to be a refined version of the original Droid. The formerly black and squared-off surface featured in the original Droid is now designed from a well sculpted dark chrome. It also comes with a completely flush 3.5 mm headphone jack and contoured buttons that blends well with its body. The Droid also comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that got a little bit friction as you slide it out. There were some who like it but others complains about it.
Camera
The Droid 2 is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera with a maximum capture resolution of 720 x 480. There were some that find the original Droid to have a bad shooter and Droid 2 doesn’t appear to have improved this at all. In fact, its autofocus is still noisy and slow, its macro mode doesn’t really function well and images are more often than not, hazy in appearance. It also has the same awkward UI featured camera featured in the Droid X which makes changing mode a less efficient process.
Software
The Droid 2 comes with the Android 2.2 OS which is significantly better than the Android 2.1 and comes with additional applications such as Swype, DLNA support and a 3G Mobile Hotspot. But strangely this didn’t seem to give a better performance in a day-to-day usage.
Here’s a little comparisson between Droid 2 and Droid.
Motorola and Verizon knew for a fact that they need to come up with a much better model and more enhanced specs and features if they wish to keep a quality QWERTY Android device in the market. But it seems that they failed to do such improvements with the Droid 2. It appears that consumers will still prefer to have the original Droid than the Droid 2.
