Just like most people expected, Facebook announced a new technology initiative that they have called the “Open Compute Project.” You may wonder what this project is all about. Basically, in this project Facebook will be opening the specifications and also design documents that went into creating their customized servers and datacenters. Apparently, these are more efficient than the existing industry standards that we have today. This would be a great advantage especially for those people who are involved in building social applications.
So why is Facebook opening this? Well, Facebook strongly believes that sharing will help the ecosystem grow since this project will basically involve giving back and pushing technologies forward. Well, giants like Google has been doing this for quite a long time and now Facebook is also opening this project as well to help the industry in their own little way.
With these specifications being opened, we can expect other startups that have enough cash to have better opportunity of building their own servers and datacenters as well. In this way, they can easily customize these designs in order to make it suitable for their needs.
