A panic button which is aimed at keeping safety nets for children who use the Facebook page is a campaign called for by the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).

Together with Facebook, the installation of the application will allow its homepage to say that they are already in control online. The step was taken as part of a negotiation process between Ceop and Facebook, which was resisted by the latter earlier. However, this step became a need when a 33 year old rapist who presented himself as a teenage boy raped and murdered 17-year old Ashleigh Hall just by communicating through Facebook.
This mounted concerns for parents since November while the Ceop who were following the moves of online sex abusers promised they would do something about it. In the same line, fourty-four chiefs of police in England, Wales and Scotland signed a petition backing Ceop’s call for a panic button. Bebo was the first to make use of this panic button with MySpace following the same agenda.

The project called by Ceop as ClickCeop wherein users now play a role in keeping them safe and allows their friends to know what is happening too as an important awareness program. Jim Gamble, Ceop’s chief executive said that the ClickCeop would give reassurance to every worrying parent and create a safer environment for their wards. Furthermore, it allows kids from 13 to 18 a spot to report inappropriate sexual behavior. Clicking on it directs one to report bullying and sexual abuses.
However, the ClickCeop is not an automatic plug-in but an optional application which kids can download or bookmark to their page. Blogger Larry Magid of the Huffington Post says that the application is not all about panic but engagement which will make young people access resources that will report “cyberbullying, hacking, mobile problems, harmful content and sexual behavior grooming”.
The program will be initiated in the UK but Vicky Gillings, a spokeswoman of Ceop , said that it can be adopted in other countries which will alert authorities about abuses and other online safety nets within their vicinity.
