Online social networking sites like Facebook is a new way of communicating and socializing in the present time. But is it true that Facebook has become one of the favorite sources of evidence by divorce attorneys?

This matter has been the talk of the town for weeks as several reports involving the use of Facebook videos, pictures and posts as evidences to some divorce cases began to flood the web. A detailed report from the Associated Press confirmed that social networks are a new favorite source of information for divorce attorneys. Facebook users are constantly publicizing the day-to-day happenings in their lives. And it is surprising to know that sometimes we tend to do excessive unveiling of our personal information (love life, habits, hobbies and financial records) without even noticing it.
There have been reports proving that Facebook really has been one major factor in some divorce cases. For example, a mother lost custody of her children because there has been evidence of her playing Farmville and World of Warcraft at the same time she declared bonding and taking care of them. Another case is a husband denying anger management problems but forgot that he posted this exact words in his Facebook account under the ‘tell me about yourself’ section, “If you have the balls to get in my face, I’ll kick your ass into submission!” These words prove how angry he is and that he cannot control his anger instead he had to tell it to the world. One mom also denies in court the use of marijuana but posted pictures of her smoking pots in her Facebook account.

American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers said that 81% of their members have used evidences from Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Divorce-Online, a DIY divorce site in the United Kingdom stated that the word “Facebook” appeared 20% in all their cases handled late last year. Divorce attorney Leslie Matthews said “You’re finding information that you just never get in the normal discovery process – ever.” “People are just blabbing things all over Facebook. People don’t yet quite connect what they’re saying in their divorce cases is completely different from what they’re saying on Facebook. It doesn’t even occur to them that they’d be found out.”
Coming from the organizations of lawyers and the lawyers themselves, Facebook truly can be a good source of evidences in divorce cases. So people should start thinking first before posting anything scandalous and intriguing pictures, videos and words in their Facebook accounts.
