The Facebook-Skype video partnership has faced its first test in the scam world when a strange post appeared on FB wall asking the user to enable video chat.

Clicking on the post redirects to the common “request for permission” page regarding access to personal info and posting privileges. It turns out that no video calling is enabled but instead, the friends’ list is harvested to send spam messages about filling-out surveys. A sponsored or paid survey is one of the many ways to earn income online targeted for home-based users. Luckily for some, the notorious app is a welcomed failure giving out a “non-availability” message instead.
The announcement of the partnership also included the steps on enabling the chat. The user is simply requested to sign up on the official FB video calling page, download a program, adjust the Flash process and then fire up for chat. Those who have fallen prey to the scam are advised to turn off the chat feature if the need doesn’t arise. While no official FB reaction has been heard of, taking the necessary precaution at this early would help prevent spillover of the scammer’s evil intentions.
It is also laudable to inform the FB friends beforehand to keep them on guard from hereon.
