Foursquare: A Different Social Networking Approach? | Review

Posted on 19 January 2010 by pinoytutorial

Advocato, Baddoo, Bebo, Classmates, Facebook, Friendster, all the way down to Twitter, Xanga, and Zoo – the list for available online social networking is quite long. The thing is, the list doesn’t end. Day by day, the venue for connection grows – and in significant numbers. It’s not as if people are connected well enough with all their memberships.

They seem to be wanting more. It is apparent that in all these social networking sites, there is a common theme: individuality. This theme seems to be the main selling point for all the different social networking sites because on the surface, although they all look the same and have the same purpose of connecting people, they are actually different.

There’s a site for blog lovers, pet lovers, friend lovers – all these moved to express one’s individuality. They believe it’s what sets them apart from the others. To add on to this long list of growing social networking sites, there is a particular one that uniquely captures an individual’s day-to-day activities, not through a shout out nor a status update, but through location. Let us get to know Foursquare.

Foursquare was materialized only March of year 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai. Their main objective was to create a social networking site that is location-based. The users, instead of updating their “status” to connect with friends, update their “location.” Foursquare can be accessed via web or accessed via installed software in capable mobile devices.

To begin using Foursquare, one must first sign up and connect the software to the mobile phone. This can be done in either of the two ways. First, download the Foursquare application to the phone; or second, access the Foursquare website on your mobile phone’s browser.

Once you’re signed up, you can start to “check-in” to your different locations. When you’ve checked-in to a certain place, Foursquare notifies your friends of your whereabouts. Your friends will be able to suggest places to go or activities to do, in relation to where you are checked-in.

The cool thing about Foursquare is that it is not limited within its own site. You are able to “check-in” to a place and notify your friends in both Twitter and Facebook. Foursquare also coordinates with enterprises in creating social media rewards that encourage customer loyalty. This is just one of many other Foursquare features that actually changes the world – and this is literal because as of January 2010, Foursquare changed its location model to allow check-ins from any location world-wide.  Check out foursquare video clip and see it in action.
