Google has been the most popular search engine anywhere today. And just recently Google introduced a new URL shortener to the public that is seen to become the toughest competitor of Bit.ly, which is the most popular among URL shorteners for quite some time and this will be known as Goo.gl. The Goo.gl made its debut last December as an added feature into other Google products. Google promises to bring the most stable, secure and fastest URL shortener in the web with the Goo.gl.

Google also created a standalone website so that anyone can use Google to shorten and track the URLs they have shared via social media sites as well as through e-mail. This URL shortener service used to be private and has been used automatically with feedburner posts, but now that it has been open to the public and promises to provide a more secure service.
Initially this new URL shortener was created because the company doesn’t want to rely from other URL shortener services with the same purpose. There are many shorteners out there that come with great features and that may be the main reason why Google guaranteed that the Goo.gl comes with a host of interesting functionalities as well.
With this new URL shortener, Google has promised the following:
- Stability – this service promises to be 100% stable
- Security- it comes with a spam filter so you know that it is safe and secure
- Speed- it comes with an improved server speed to convert the shortened URL to the long one
These key features seem to be very important since other similar services have been experiencing problems such as downtime and having malicious parties masking deceptive links. This service also comes with a URL-tracking feature. With this feature, Google users can simply log-in to their Google account to view their URL history, traffic sources, referrers and visitor profiles for countries, browsers and platforms.
Making this new URL shortener public seems to be a good idea. There have been some speculations that this action is part of Google’s business strategy since Google has been in web business for years now and URLs has been the basic framework of the internet. Whatever Google’s reason behind this, the most important thing is that this new service will provide us with a faster and more convenient web browsing experience.
