For years now, Google has been in some ways wanting to sell digital e-books online. There’s been a rumor going around that they’re going to start this new business by the month of June or July. This throws the company in a head to head battle with the other companies that engage in this business like Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc.
Google has been discussing its plans to distribute books online for several months now and has been talking about this new service they call, Google Editions. The Google Company is hoping to distinguish the Google Editions from all its other competitors by allowing users to download books from several websites using different devices and not just to limit it on propriety devices and softwares.
Google’s manger for strategic-partner development, Chris Palma announced the schedule for Google’s plans on Tuesday at a publishing industry panel in New York.
Google’s Jeff Trachtenberg has mentioned about the plans Google has of selling digital books starting this summer, marking the start of the battle between online book sellers. This, plus the fact that Apple has been inviting antitrust scrutiny from regulators and then Congress passed a web-ad privacy bill.
Google has announced that users can buy the books they want through the book-search service. It will also allow independent book retailers to sell Google Editions in their own site and even get a portion of the revenue. The company is still debating around if the retailers should be the ones to set the price or if they should.
Those persons who download Google Editions will be able to read books from a web browser which means that, no matter what type of E-reader you have, it wouldn’t really matter. The company’s also thinking of creating and designing a software that would help maximize reading on certain gadgets like the iPad or iPhone, but they haven’t made official statements on these yet.
It’s a good road to take, selling e-books online and even letting independent stores sell it as well. Nowadays, e-books are the newest trend. It’s just that you can download e-books for free, why start selling them now? But in another light, it’s a much easy way to access the book you want without marching on to a bookstore only to find out they don’t have stocks.
