Have you heard of the name Eric Schmidt? Apparently, Eric Schmidt is Google’s CEO who has been featured as a caricature driving an ice cream truck in a video that was created by anti-Google consumer group called Consumer Watchdog. The said video is actually a commentary which gives emphasis to Google’s lack of respect for consumer privacy and it was played on a billboard in Times Square. According to the said group they have paid to have this video played around 36 times per day.

The Consumer Watchdog group has been exerting so much effort and tries to get the attention of the government in order to create some sort of a “Do not track me” list that will prevent online companies such as Google to gather personal information from its consumers as well as track their moves online for their own personal benefits. This is quite similar to the “Do not call list” created by the Federal Trade Commission as ordered by the Congress to prevent telemarketers from their quite disturbing acts.
Consumer Watchdog President Jamie Court strongly believes that every person has the right to privacy. Every individual must have direct control on how his personal information is gathered and for what purposes it will be used for. That is why the Consumer Watchdog group has been fighting for the issue of online privacy for consumers. They strongly believe that Google has been violating the right to privacy of their consumers by taking personal information from them.
Some finds this action made by the Consumer Watchdog group to be something “crazy”. But there were others that also believe and supports for the advocacy of the said consumer group. This is actually not the first time that the Consumer Watchdog group made such action against Google. Previously, the group also revealed that Google might have actually sniffed on unsecured Wi-Fi networks on some of the lawmakers Washington-area residences as part of Google’s Street View and Google Maps program.
According to Google, they respect the privacy of every consumer that is why they have updated their privacy settings and provided tools that will allow users to control their privacy online. Some of these tools are Google Dashboard, Ads Preference Manager, Chrome Incognito mode and “off the record Gmail chat”.
Google may be facing a lot of privacy issues lately, but the big question is this “Is Google really as evil as what the video suggests?” What do you think?
