Google Goggles Review: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words Deciphered

Posted on 21 February 2010 by pinoytutorial

“Words are not enough to express how I feel for you”. This is probably a line you would hear from a die-hard romantic. Google Goggles may be far from romanticism but the same concept of this romantic line is also used to describe what this mobile application can do.

From the search giant Google Inc. comes another downloadable mobile application called the Google Goggles. Sometimes words are simply not enough to describe what you are looking for so why think of words when you can take a picture from your cellular phone and use that picture in ‘googling’ your queries. There are many instances where and when this application is advantageous. Say you are on a holiday in a foreign country and you want to gather some information about that place, simply take a picture of the famous landmark then use Google to search for it.

Simply put, Google Goggles allows a users to take pictures via their Android mobile phones to search the web especially for things that are not quite easy to describe such as books, landmarks, logos, contact information, artwork, barcodes and texts. As of now, Goggles is not yet fit for pictures of animals, plants, cars, furniture or apparel.

At the MWC, Eric Schmidt Chief Executive Officer of Google) demonstrated a new prototype of the Google Goggles that can translate text that are captured in photos. But right now the mobile application can only translate German to English translation. Basically, the archetype operates by connecting the Android Phone’s camera to an optical character recognition (or OCR) engines, identifies the captured image as text then decodes the text into English using Google translate.

Google Goggles can be used on a location with Strong GPS signal provided that the android device has:

  • Android 1.6 or above version
  • QVGA screen
  • camera with autofocus
