Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are on the rise especially nowadays. And because of this Google seems to take another important step as it tries to get in through the world of social networking via a new feature called “+1.” Apparently, this new feature is similar to the Facebook “like” button, but the difference is that it is integrated directly into the world’s biggest search engine. However, this Google announcement about this new feature raised a lot of questions that were not discussed in the company’s official announcement.

You might probably wonder why Google has decided to come out with this feature. Apparently, coming out with the “+1” feature is one of Google’s way to compete with popular social networking site-Facebook. In addition to this, Google aims to make search results more relevant to its users. Coming out with this feature is basically based on the assumption that people often consult with their friends in order to ask for some advice especially at times that they need to make an important decision.
Well, you might probably wonder if this “+1” feature will have some effects on search rankings and according to Google, it will not really affect the search rankings, but Google is also interested in incorporating it in the future. Those who wanted to try this new feature, may go to Google.com/experimental and you will be seeing a “+1” icon next to each of the link found in the Google search results.
Basically, Google identifies this action as a “public stamp of approval” and it will basically be like it. As your Google contacts from various Google products such as Gmail, Buzz and the Reader will be able to make use of this feature and help in making the search results more relevant for you. However, your Facebook friends will not be able to make use of this feature and it seems that Facebook is not even interested in supporting this Google feature knowing that it would be a competitor of its “like” button.
Here’s a preview video:
In addition to showing up in search results, Google also plans to offer this “+1” feature to publishers as well. This will allow its readers to +1 anything that they like without the need of leaving a publisher’s site. Well, it seems that this new feature from Google will be surely appreciated by a lot of users since it will basically make any search easier and faster. And it would be really interesting to see how it will be going up against Facebook’s “like” button. Let us just wait and see what happens next.
