If you’ve been wondering how to download torrent files and still feel alienated with the term “torrent”, I guess this post is a jackpot for you. This article will teach you, “how to download torrent” in the most advantageous ways. But first, what in the world is a torrent file? and where to download them…All for FREE?!
Enough chit-chat, let’s get started!
What the heck is a Torrent?
Actually the term Torrent came from the root word “BitTorrent”, according to wikipedia it’s a a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol used for distributing large amounts of data. BitTorrent is one of the most common protocols for transferring large files, and it has been estimated that it accounts for approximately 27-55% of all Internet traffic
Okay, here are the Five basic steps to download torrent files…
1.) To download a torrent file you need to have a BitTorrent client a.k.a BitTorrent downloader. The most popular of all clients are uTorrent and BitComet. I personally use both, but due to the simplicity and effectiveness of uTorrent. I say that’s the one you should utilize. Here’s the download link
2.) The only thing you need to do now is search for torrent sites. The most popular free sites are torrentz.com, isohunt.com and mininova.org though we are not disclosing other torrent sites that offer torrent sharing. Feel free to search it in google. (click to enlarge)
3) Now when you see the torrent file you are going to download (e.g Transformers0-DvDrip Axxo), you need to verify it first and see if the torrent is not bogus. I guess now is the time that you should know the two famous terms on downloading torrent files. “Seeders” and “Leechers”. Basically, these terms simply means:
Seeders = Sharers of the file(s) you are downloading present at that time. You could also call them “Angels”.
Leechers = The people who doesn’t share the torrent file and are simply downloading it. If this is your first time to download torrents then you are a leecher.
The rule of thumb:
The higher the seeders are the faster and the higher the possibility that the torrent you are downloading is the “Real Deal!”. Although there are instances that seeds are fake with some scam torrent sites. So the other barometer you can use to authenticate the torrent you will be downloading is by checking the comments of people on that torrent file. I can’t stress how important it is to see the feedback of people who happened to download that torrent file earlier than you. Although, you also need to separate the good comments and the fake comments. So you can save time on downloading :)
4.) After downloading the file, simply double click it and your uTorrent will load it (.torrent file) in utorrent dashboard. You will then need to set the location of the torrent file, so you will know where the downloaded files are being stored. I say, put it in the spacious part of your drive :)
5.) Depending on the size of the torrent file, it could take minutes, hours even days to finish. Usually an average DSL connection (384Kbps DSL burst-connection) could have a download speed up to 100-150Kbps with a healthy torrent file. At this rate, a normal DVD-rip movie (800mb-1gig) will be completed in less than 5 hours :)
As of this moment:
Torrents are being used by millions of people and gain some controversies in terms of piracy and not abiding the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). One should understand that torrent itself is legal to use, the “illegal” term comes when you start to upload copyrighted work/media without the companies permission.
So much for the torrent for dummies tutorial :D
You should know that P2P-Torrent evolution is one of the “greatest” technology internet users have ever developed. Though we don’t disclose the possibility that it could be used illicitly, however, one can’t deny its tremendous contribution to ease the way users share files to the cyberworld.
I say “Use It Properly”.
