Have you heard of Swype? Do you wonder what exactly it is? Cliff Kushler, the creator of T9 keyboard technology for numeric keypads is back with another great discovery, Swype. Well, Swype is the newest technology featured by recently launched touch-screen laptops and smartphones and manufactured by Swype Inc. It is a new alphanumeric input technology that allows the user to enter data or type words by simply sliding a finger or using a stylus on the letters, lifting your finger only between words.

Swype was first introduced in Samsung Omnia II mobile phone running on Windows Mobile. And on March 22, 2010, a new Guinness World Record was set by Samsung Omnia for the fastest text message on a touch screen mobile phone and this is because of its Swype technology. Typing Speed using this technology is 50 words per minute according to its manufacturer. But according to Cliff Kushler, its inventor, it can even reach a 55 word per minute range.
Swype works well with touchscreen devices with QWERTY keyboard and it also includes a tapping predictive text system. It has 3 major components namely an input analyzer, word search engine and a manufacturer customizable interface. It also uses an error correcting algorithm which enables the correction of spelling errors and comes with a built in 65,000-word dictionary. It is available in almost any language such as English, Spanish, German, Italian and any other languages as well.
Basically, the Swype technology is very easy to use and makes our data entry experience faster and convenient, with just some few tricks we can make easy tasks such as capitalize words, select double letters and insert punctuation marks.
To download Swype in your smartphones just follow the procedures below:
- Download the Swype installer for the updated version. If you’re using the previous version, uninstall it first before proceeding
- On your phone, open the Swype beta email
- Click the first link in the email
- Wait for the file to download
- Tap the Swype-Installer.apk
- If Install Blocked, press settings, if not proceed to step 9
- Check unknown sources
- Press ok and then repeat step 5
- Press Install
- Press Open, then enter the email address and password that you registered then press Login
- Press Start Download
- Wait and then press Install
- Wait until the download has been completed
- To enable the Swype Input method , just press Enable Swype, click the check box next to Swype, then press ok
- Open a new message, then press and hold any text in the field, choose Input method, and then select Swype and then you’re done.
The steps above will basically run for “most phones” as Swype claimed on its Swype Beta installation page. You can also use the step-by-step instruction below which mobilecrunch had compiled for Android handsets. However, it works ONLY with WVGA phones like Droid and Nexus One.
- Download and install the Astro file manager from the Android Marketplace
- Download this zip file
- Unzip that file, which will give you a file called “[mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk”
- Copy the APK file to your handset’s SD card
- On your Android handset, go to Settings > Applications > and check the box next to Unknown Sources
- Use Astro to browse for the apk file on your SD card, install it.
- Go to Settings > Language and Keyboard. Enable the Swype keyboard.
- You should now be able to switch between the standard keyboard and the Swype keyboard by tapping-and-holding on any text input field.
Just follow those steps if you don’t have Swype in your smartphone or if you’re using the previous version. This is simply an amazing technology to enjoy. We can say that technology has really gone that far.

I found that to be very inaccurate with an annoying pop-up screen constantly trying to guess what you typed. Instead there’s a Swype-style app on the market called SlideIT that works the same only far more accurate, with larger keys and fully customizable shortcut dictionary. It isn’t free (I paid about $8), but worth every penny in my opinion.
Shapewriter’s been available on the iOS for YEARS. Long before I ever heard of Swype.
I found the same article on other website as well but didn’t find installation detail. Thank you for sharing the detailed write. really helpful.
