HP Compaq and PC Hardware Will Be Sold: Samsung and Lenovo as Prospective Buyers

The way how the story ends for WebOS is quite bitter but something we already expected after seeing how poor the sales were for Touchpad and Pre 3. In fact, I feel the death of WebOS is only part of the equation and I believe customers should be more worried about that “PC Spin-Off” announcement made by its CEO Leo Apotheker yesterday.

In our previous report, we revealed there’s a chance HP might divide its PC manufacturing assets in parts and sell it to interested companies. Naturally, this is something that would go sometime and won’t happen this year or even next year but since the company is already in the process to acquire UK’s Autonomy Software for $10 billion or more, it appears this move hints the company’s is ready to surrender its almighty PC production business in the near future.

On this recent article from Bloomberg, analyst suggest that possible buyers of HP’s Compaq PC production line will be Lenovo or Samsung. For those who are unaware, Lenovo was originally owned by IBM but was purchased by the Chinese company on 2005. Since HP is announced to be moving forward on the “software and enterprise” sector – just like IBM – there’s a big chance the future of Compaq notebooks, HP Desktop computers, etc. will be in the hands of a Chinese company.

When Lenovo and Samsung were asked if there’s a growing interest to buy HP Compaq in the future, both parties refused to comment. Bottom factor? HP will be out on the PC industry in the next years to come and its up to Dell, Asus, Acer and Lenovo on how they’ll try to compete with Apple’s almighty machine empire.
