IBM PCM Memory: Specs and Future Release for the Flash-Killer

Posted on 03 July 2011 by pinoytutorial

When it comes to the computer industry, we cannot deny the fact that IBM is definitely one of the most popular and well-respected names. And just recently, the scientists at the IBM Research and demonstrated a new memory technology to look forward to. This latest breakthrough we are talking about is the so-called phase change memory (PCM). Apparently, the PCM has the ability to store multiple data bits per cell over extended periods of time. The development of this new memory technology will surely give way to a faster and more durable application for consumer devices at a lower cost.

Some of the devices that will benefit from this new technology include mobile phones and cloud storage and the good news is that this is not limited to these devices, but also includes high-performance applications such as enterprise data storage. And because PCM is a combination of speed, endurance, non-volatility and density, it is now possible to enable a paradigm shift for ITs and storage system within the next five years. It has been quite a long time now since scientists have been looking for a universal and non-volatile memory technology that would allow computers and servers to boot immediately as well as enhance the overall performance of IT systems.

This makes the IBM PCM a promising contender that has the ability to write and retrieve data 100 times faster than Flash. In addition to this, RC also enables high storage capacity and also manages to maintain data even when the power is off. PCM is also durable and bears the ability to endure at least 10,000,000 write cycles all in all. As compared with the Flash, which is only $2300 is month and also have the ability to endure 30,000 cycles as well.

In today’s digital age, we cannot deny the fact that most organizations and consumers are slowly recognizing computing models and services in which most data is stored and processed in the cloud. Well, this is such as a technological breakthrough that will surely captivate the attention of many. More details about IBM’s latest technology will come in the following days so stay tuned.
