Intel has been a big player in the desktop and mobile PC industry. Its latest product line – Sandy Bridge processors – is taking center stage and is believed to dominate the market again. However, we’re surprised to find out that Intel is also gearing towards manufacturing processors for Tablet devices starting with its Oak Trail based Z670.

As reported, the Intel Atom Z670 processor will be used on Tablet PCs and will sport a single core (dual thread) 1.5GHz frequency with 512 KB cache. It will also have a low 5W TDP requirement which is suitable for portable tablet gadgets.
Those data are not really astonishing until we’ve discovered that Intel plans to sell it to tablet manufacturers at $75 – flat! FYI, the average price of a dual-core Cortex A9 processor is hovering around 20 bucks. So, Tablet manufacturers need to pay more than thrice they used to just to get the Z670.
Additionally, it was announced that Z670 will support Windows 7 OS first and requires an SM35 chipset. Other OS support for MeeGo and Android (Gingerbread and Honeycomb) will be announced later. This is the first for Intel to offer a tablet processor – and certainly will not be the last. However, the company may need to rethink its strategy because there are many good competitors on this field — like Qualcomm, Nvidia, Samsung and TI — that offer a better deal.
