iPhone 4 Specifications | Official Specs and Review

Guys, the moment of truth has finally arrived! And if you’re one of those person who think they’ve seen all about the new iPhone because of that infamous stolen iPhone from Giz, then think again. You’ll be surprised, because what Steve Jobs had released for us today, is somewhat we haven’t seen before – at least that’s how he puts it.

It has been only a couple of months since the release of their magical iPad, which was really magical in terms of sales, to think that it had sold 2 million iPads in just 59 days? As Steve puts it, there is abruptly 1 ipad sold for every 3 seconds — Magical, eh?

And today, the new iPhone is here. So ladies and gents, let me present you, the iPhone 4!

iphone 4

iPhone 4 ‘Uber’ Resolution.

We all remember, what the old iPhone 3Gs display looked like – I mean, if you have tried Nexus One or you have that newly bought EVO 4G with you, then you’ll probably take those two as a winner in terms of display.

But, Apple isn’t blind, in-fact they know this weakness. And iPhone 4 has an amazing upgrade for that.

Screen Resolution: It’s now augmented to 960 x 640. If you’ve been paying attention with the screen-res of your phones lately, the normal res is 480 x 320. What Apple just did to the iPhone 4, is it doubled its screen capacity. Obviously, the benefits will be amazing as well. This just means that it now has the ability to play games or apps that’s beyond the usual resolution and it still can render the graphics on a crystal clear display. Obviously, it can now play 720p HD vids at ease.

Retina Display: Making the display to go as far as 326 pixels per inch. You should know that the maximum pixels our eyes can see is only 320 pixels per inch (12 inch away from our eyes). By increasing it to plus 6. You’ll barely see a pixelized icon on your iPhone 4 now. We’re talking about super fine detail graphic quality here on your smartphone.

As Steve Jobs puts it. “Once you see a retina display, you can’t go back,”.

iPhone 4 Form Factor / Body

When Giz, made a detailed preview of how’s the look and feel of the iPhone 4. They forget to mention one thing, that it’s now officially the “Thinnest smartphone in the world”. How thin? Basically, it’s now 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS. 4.5×2.31×0.37 inches to be exact. Although it gained a bit of its weight than its predecessor, pumping it to 137 grams.

You’ll also notice that the steel rim at the side of the iPhone is now its new antenna. Somehow, this raises some concern for others to think that this design might mitigate the signal it receives during calls.

New Cameras!

iPhone 4 Cameras

Yes, the prediction before that it’ll have a front-facing camera as well is very real. Some of the notable features are, it has a 5mp rear cam with 5x digital zoom capability. Can now shoot 720p @ 30 frame rate recording. And it has new applications — the iMovie and Facetime!

Basically, iMovie is iPhone 4’s new way to edit video with just a tap. And we’re talking about full home video here, not those little clips. Price will cost you 4.99 USD, though.

For the front camera, we have Facetime. This is the new way how iPhone 4 will meld the rear camera preview and your front-facing camera preview in your main display. It will also add the ability for you to shoot pics on landscape or portrait. Here’s what I’m talking about. Via engadget

Processor / Battery and other goodies

iphone 4 battery

As expected this one will run an A4 processor just like the iPad. Jobs claimed that the new iPhone will have a better enduring batteries. And I thought it was insane. Here’s how it breaks up: 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 10 hours of video playback, 300 hours of standby.

I mean seriously? 10 hours of WiFi Browsing and Video Playback – This is just unreal. I can’t help but to look back with Nexus One and EVO 4G. I’m sure know what I mean :D

Also, aside from its already good accelerometer. The iPhone 4 also adapted a new technology called, “3 axis – gyroscope” Which according to Jobs (paraphrased), “Will make your gaming experience even more better!”

Apps and iOS 4

ios 4

Will use iPhone OS 4.0 which is now officially called iOS 4 – which raises some question about it, similar to the age-old platform of cisco which has the same name as well.

Obviously, Apple claim that the iOS 4 can do multi-tasking. But I’m sure it’s not what we expected.

It’s also notable that the iPhone 4 will be using Bing Search as an alternative to Google. Google will still be the default, although users can switch to Bing as well. (Google are you seeing this?)

iBooks which now had sold 5 million books on the iPad is now available to the iPhone 4 as well. And it still can read PDF files as well. (Hurrei!)

Pricing and Data Plans

Sadly, there’s no word about the new iPhone landing on another carrier aside from AT&T soon. So I guess that Verizon dream, is still quite out of reach. It’s also notable that the new iPhone will use microsim just like the iPad.

So here’s how the pricing breaks-down.

Pre-orders will start as early as June 15. And it will be officially available on June 24. And for the first time, the new iPhone will be available in Black or White — If you have been seeing those leaked iPhones from Vietnams, then this won’t be a surprise.

And the price will be $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and it will be available as well on France, Germany, UK and Japan.

By the way, in case you’re wondering how you can upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4. Engadget has provided a neat update fresh from AT&T.

“Any existing iPhone customer eligible for an upgrade between today and the end of this year will be eligible for our best pricing for iPhone 4, $199 and $299, with a two year term commitment.· Customers can verify upgrade eligibility at www.att.com/iphone or by dialing *639#. Like us, I’m sure you’re somewhat delighted of how Steve Jobs managed to pull this one off, eventhough, we already had receieved numerous leaks about this next generation iPhone. Perhaps, it’s still too early to tell if this phone can beat the superphone of Android. Although, specswise, you can see how the iPhone 4 dramatically changes coming from the old iPhone 3GS.

Right now, I’m very confident to say, that the iPhone 4 provides the most beautiful resolution compare with all the current smartphones today.  However, there’s still some questions left unaswered on this announcement. Like, “Can the old iPhone 3G users just swap their phone and add some cash for a new iPhone 4?”. I believe the dillema will start again, with Apple’s greatest weakness, — AT&T. Somehow, during the statement of Steve, I was hoping to hear a glimpse about the new iPhone landing on a different carrier. But alas, It was still just a fantasy, waiting to be fulfilled.

In the end, it will be up to your preferences, of what smartphone you’ll choose. You can’t deny that right now. Android offers the best alternative to the iPhone. You can be that tech-savvy guy, who wants to buy both types of smartphone and have the best of both world. Or be a faithful believer of one brand. The choice is always yours. But if you’ll ask me, I say choose something that fits your lifestyle.

Just wanted to point out that going from 480×320=153,600 pixels to 960×640=614,400 pixels is a quadruple increase, not just double.

720 HD means that there are 720 lines of horizontal resolution. Since the iPhone 4 has only 640 lines of horizontal resolution, “Obviously, it can now play 720p HD vids at ease.” is not very accurate. Besides even if it did match HD 720, how does that simply make a device able to play it with ease. This would have more to do the the processors than anything else.

Also nVidia has Tegra-2 based reference devices showing at CompTIA last year that could easily do 8-10 hours of HD 1080 video at actual HD resolutions. Apple is nothing more than a hyped-up, self-important, marketing machine.

Dan, stop hating. You can’t compare a device that is already out to a device that is still in the making. That would have been like comparing the HTC hero to the HTC Eco, at the launch of the hero…don’t be a techtard.

As a posed to the iPhone 4, EVO’s OS doesn’t work hand in hand with the specs at all. Still a great phone, but it needs to focus on being a little less superficial (everything being so supercharged and all) and a little more efficient at working with the stuff it has.

“What Apple just did to the iPhone 4, is it doubled its screen capacity.”

Well, not exactly. It quadrupled it. 614,400 pixels in the iPhone 4, versus 153,600 in previous versions.

Evo have only 5 hours battery with 4G on :) And if you browsing, it will turn off after 3 hours :) Why nobody says that, when they go „ohhh iphone is crap, evo is better“ :D :D

So did you test the battery life yourself? or did you just take apples word…
