There’s an entire catalogue explaining how Gorilla Glass works if you’ll check wiki’s references but just to give you a summary, it’s a project first developed on 2006 and was publicly popularized beginning 2010 used primarily on smartphones, tablets, notebooks and sometimes, even the panels used on your television. Currently, it’s one of the leading glass display utilized by companies due to its strength thanks to its special composition diffused with potassium ions creating layers through the glass making it resistant to damage.
Today, guess what? It’ll have its second-coming called “Gorilla Glass 2” expected to be unveiled on CES. According to Corning’s Specialty Materials General Manager James Steiner, the new innovation for Gorilla Glass technology is expected to meet the challenges on higher functionality from thinner designs needed by manufacturers along with enabling a broader “touch technology” penetration.
Still, there’s no telling what are the alpha devices blessed by GC2 but from what we can tell, the company is prepping up to reveal a giant 82-inch touchscreen show along with a gorilla glass-covered video wall integrated with speakers protected by the same glass technology. Just so you know, the later generations of iPhone (4 / 4S) are using Gorilla Glass although the Cupertino Giant is a little shy on revealing that to the public until it was discovered as part of Steve Jobs’ biography. Likewise, this gives some interesting odds if the upcoming iPhone 5 this year has already been infused by Gorilla Glass 2.
Hopefully they’ll blend.
