Nobody seems to have mentioned the battery life. Any slate is going to have similar battery performance as a typical laptop or worse, so it can't replace ereader, or phone. It'll be just a casual home environment light-weight connected touch screen terminal. Probably a dock to encourage inductive charging.

There is still a gap between the tablet and ereaders, as John said above. The tablet looks greats for mobile access, but I still prefer to read on a screen that is comfortable, and one that can be easily read even under the glare of the sun. At this point, I'd be inclined to carry both the Kindle and a tablet with me on my travels.

Kindle or another ereader could bridge this divide by providing as much web access as possible while still using e-ink, and without putting to much strain on the battery life or start-up time. If Kindle simply offered an on/off button for extended internet access, the user could choose which functions to use.

This is key to me, because no matter how nice a tablet is, backlit screens are inadequate for reading.

Sorry Tim, but a tablet is not going to replace the Kindle, Nook or any other book reader anytime soon for the simple fact that the Kindle and others are e-ink which makes reading a pleasure. I couldn't imagine reading a book on a computer screen (which essentially is what a tablet would be).

The iSlate will make the Kindle obsolete on the day it is released. At 7", it eliminates the need for a laptop in 80% of the applications you're already using. It will interact with Hulu type on demand video, you can use it to make phone calls, and, it's rolling along the cool that is Apple. It's going to be hard to ignore.

7" is the size of a photo, too close to the iPhone size to really make a difference.

Choice in size will make it dificult to choose and slow down sales.

Wow, it's gonna be a crazy time again! I just can't imagine what mad frenziness this new Apple device will bring again to our modern societies!
Will we all be dropping pens and notepads by the end of the year and bookstores will be going out of business before we know it?! NO IDEA.

And that's always the most frightening and exciting about a new Apple product. It's unpredictable and always sets a trend. For the best, as for the worst.
