Kobo Touch Edition E-reader: Review, Price and Specs Update

Posted on 26 May 2011 by pinoytutorial

Kobo has just made an announcement that it will release a touchscreen version of its eink e-reader this coming June. And the good thing about this e-reader is the fact that instead of using buttons to navigate, users will swipe to turn the page, tap to look up a word and slide to highlight. The logic here is that books don’t have keyboards and an e-reader should not have one too. Well, Kobo’s Touch Edition E-reader is not really the first touchscreen e-reader in the market nowadays. In fact, Sony has also been making touchscreen readers for quite some time now.

Apparently, this e-reader is the first one to be supported by a major book reseller. Other e-readers like the Amazon Kindle has also been released in the market as well, but the only difference is that it was not released as a touchscreen device. Aside from this, you may also have heard about the Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color. However, this device is more of a tablet device than an e-reader.

Basically, the Kobo e-reader touch edition is a six-inch one –button touchscreen e-reader that is definitely cheaper than the Amazon Kindle. Aside from a more affordable price, it is also a bit smaller and lighter than the Kindle and the Nook as well though all of these three devices sport a 6-inch screen. It may not be as popular as the Amazon Kindle, but this humble Kobo device is still a very popular digital reader.

Aside from being a touchscreen device, the Kobo e-reader touch edition is also a Wi-Fi enabled device. The good thing about this Wi-Fi reader is that it has a new search tool that is accessible through a virtual keyboard and highlighting technology that makes the task of looking up words via its built-in Merriam Webster dictionary easier. In addition to this, you will surely be impressed on how this e-reader turns each page quickly, open a PDF file and zoom in and scroll around.

Here’s a hands-on video from Engadget:

This device will be penetrating the market through Kobo partners like Best Buy and Walmart and will have a retail price of $ 129 only. So would you be interested to have one?
