Lenovo’s Consumer Business Group’s Senior VP and President Liu Jun have just revealed its company’s intention to come up with a touch-only Android tablet. This device will be called the “LePad” and apparently the said device will use an Android Mobile operating system.

Lenovo’s decision to create the LePad is brought about by the increasing pressure on Lenovo to compete with Apple as it tries to develop devices that are relatively smaller and lighter than netbooks. Just this year, Lenovo began selling its very own version of a smartphone called the “Le Phone”. The Le Phone is believed to compete with Apple’s iPhone.
With the ongoing development of the LePad, it seems that Lenovo may be preparing to take on Apple’s iPad this time. Lenovo has seen a great opportunity in China since as of present Apple’s iPad has not yet been released in this country. Apple has just released its iPad in Hongkong last July 23 but it has not yet announced any plans to bring the iPad in mainland China.
Some other Chinese companies have also developed their own tablet that looks like the exact imitation of Apple’s iPad. But with Lenovo being well-known in China has a definite advantage over these Chinese companies. In fact, Lenovo will be one of the largest companies that will release such a device.
Lenovo intends to establish itself as much as possible and take the opportunity while Apple has not yet penetrated mainland China. Lenovo is definitely on with its strategy of winning China first before it begins selling its product in other countries as well.
Part of Lenovo’s vision is to make the mobile internet hardware and services to become an essential part of its business over the next 5 years. Lenovo seems to take this challenge as well as its vision seriously. As a matter of fact, it recently delayed the Skylight and IdeaPad U1 in order to switch to Android and meet the current market demands. It is widely understood that this action was made in order to come up with a mobile OS that is more competitive with the iOS on the iPad.
As of present, there has been no official press release nor conference held to discuss the details of the LePad. But surely it will run an Android OS, let’s just hope that it starts with an Android 2.2 upon its launched by the end of this year.
Information about its specs as well as its price upon its potential release late this year has not yet been officially announced. And there are still lots of questions as to what applications and new features that the LePad has to offer. Will the LePad be able to survive a competition against Apple’s iPad? This question is yet to be answered.
