Who wouldn’t want to have a copy of their favorite songs for free and within just seconds? Well, with our fast paced world, the fastest and easiest way of getting things always wins. LimeWire is a well known file sharing site and has one of the fastest and easiest way of downloading files especially music files (.wma, .MP3 and so on). But the said site which is run by the Lime Group is facing the toughest trial in their business. The Recording Industry Association of America had sued the peer-to-peer site before the judge over copyright infringement issues.
The music industry demands that the company be closed and financially destroyed. They want a federal court ordering LimeWire manager to end streaming advertisements and collecting ad revenue as well as stop offering software upgrades. The new court order also indicates that the “amount of statutory damages awarded in this case easily could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars (if not over a billion dollars).”
The U.S District Judge Kimba Wood ruled in favor o the RIAA in the said lawsuit. She found that users of the services offered by Lime Wire had really committed a “substantial amount of copyright infringement” and that the staff of Lime Group were not able to take meaningful steps to lessen their violations. The judge had found that Lime Group, maker of the LimeWire software and their founder Mark Goton as liable of the copyright infringement. The said decision could also come with the cost being asked by the recording industry which is a recoup of as much as 1 billion dollars.
Two weeks ago, however, Zeeshan Zaidi, the Chief Operating Officer of Lime Wire said that he was hoping to be able to work out a licensing deal with the labels and allow them to sell their music on LimeWire’s online store. Although the said move is genuine, it seems that it came out of date and that the music industry had no time to do negotiations with the company for now.
A representative from the company had said that Lime Wire is preparing for all scenario and that during his time, they are remaining focused on their future plans and stay dedicated to the development of a music service that benefits artist, music consumers and the industry as well.
LimeWire site is really delivering great services for their users since it’s all for free and very easy to download. However, it’s still a fact that they overrun the rights of the music industry with all their free services. Well, a billion dollars might be that big but it might as well be the right compensation for all the loses the industry had acquired because of the file sharing site.
