Limewire Shutdown: Will Frostwire be the next target?

Posted on 29 October 2010 by pinoytutorial

LimeWire is a free peer-to-peer file sharing client (P2P) and torrent client for Windows, Mac OS, Linux and other operating system that is supported by the Java Software platform and uses the Gnutella network and the BitTorrent protocol. And just recently Limewire has been all over the news as it has been ordered by a US Federal judge after a request by RIAA was made to cease from all its operation. Apparently, LimeWire was ordered to disable all its functions in its current application in order to stop its users from sharing copyrighted materials.

LimeWire is basically the most installed torrent application nowadays and RIAA strongly believes that this Gnuttela-based client might have taken away millions of dollars and poses a great threat to the music industry. This is why RIAA filed a petition before a New York District court a few months ago ordering the said torrent application to completely shut down its operations.

And as mentioned this petition made by RIAA against LimeWire was granted. Apparently, LimeWire was ordered to cease operations on the grounds that it was proven to have deliberately encouraged its users to commit substantial infringement. In addition to that, evidence was shown that LimeWire even sold its application to Napster users and proved that its business directly revolves around a mass copyright infringement.

The New York District Court has ordered LimeWire to shut down its entire operation including all searches as well as downloading and uploading through its clients. All LimeWire clients were notified immediately that LimeWire is no longer usable and has ceased from operations already. What happened to LimeWire could potentially affect file-sharing landscape in the long run knowing the fact that it is the most downloadable P2P application in the market.

LimeWire clients which are estimated to be over a million are expected to search for an alternative download client, which only means that there is a strong possibility that other BitTorrent applications might be on the rise. However, it is also expected that other software applications similar to LimeWire like Frostwire and MP3 Rocket might also be affected in the future and could be the next target of RIAA.

LimeWire might only temporarily shut down its operations right now, but eventually it is expected to come back soon, but this time without the infringing services.
