Nowadays, maintaining a Twitter or Facebook account is easier than using your phone to text your friends or family. It’s also easier to meet people and that possible love of your life on the Internet than in the real world, but you cant drag your computer everywhere, or be glued to social networking sites 24/7 when you have a life to get to.
Enter MagnetU, a tiny proximity networking device that looks like an iPod Shuffle, except without the clip and large buttons. After entering your social desires, or your hobbies and interests, you can bring the small gadget around with you. If you come into contact with another person who has another magnetU, the your own device will send you a message on your phone via Bluetooth if your social desires match, and provides ratings to on your match-up. Tapping two devices together will then link your profiles together so that you can keep in touch.
It also comes with a cable, which then allows you to link it to your computer and social networking accounts on the web. This way, bumping your device with another person will automatically make your friends on the internet as well. You’re also allowed to update your status on the magnetU website itself- say something about where you’re going and when, and maybe someone would meet up with you.
In a way, this is social networking in real life and on the go in clubs and even business events. It may seem a little awkward to use, especially if some people forget to bring it with them, or are simply awkward with speaking to new people, but depending on how many people buy and actually use it, magnetU may succeed in becoming a networking gadget, or simply flop and die. Because of this, the magnetU is going to be tested in a few universities before the actual launch in early 2012 for $24.
