This year is indeed the year of the tablet devices. As more manufacturers gets into the tablet market and continues to develop their own tablet version to give in to its increasing demand. Joining these manufacturers is a partnership between OLPC and Marvell. Apparently, OLPC has decided to trash its plan for an e-book-looking laptop and concentrated in designing tablets instead.

One Laptop per Child Foundation (OLPC) and semiconductor maker Marvell have entered into a partnership which involves the manufacturing of a new tablet device. Marvell has been a consistent supporter of the foundation for quite some time and recently it has taken another step by being OLPC’s technology partner. Based on reports, Marvell has a pledged around $ 5.6 million grant in return for using their chip in this upcoming tablet.
OLPC and Marvell will work together to come up with a new tablet device. Apparently, this new tablet will be known as the XO-3 tablet. As implied with its name, the XO-3 tablet represents the third generation of the XO laptop currently sold by OLPC. And according to OLPC founder, Nicholas Negroponte this upcoming tablet is slated for a 2012 release.
In addition to this, OLPC and Marvell are also coming out with another tablet running with an Android OS and this will be shown at the CES Electronics Show 2011 which will be held at Las Vegas. Apparently, this tablet was especially designed for children belonging to the first world market and won’t carry OLPC’s brand. This is indeed part of the plan for Marvell to develop an initial machine together with OEM’s and partners in education that will be released by 2011.
Then the XO-3 tablet is more of the follow-up version to this initial tablet device. Apparently, it will be based more entirely in OLPC’s design and carry OLPC’s brand. Basically, this upcoming tablet also targets the first world market as well. According to OLPC, the XO-3 tablet will be made entirely out of plastic and also comes with a two-mode display that is for indoors as well as bright light. Moreover, this tablet will run with the Linux OS.
As rumored, the company aims to price the XO-3 tablet at around $ 100 and slated for a 2012 release. For now, let us just wait for more information about this upcoming XO-3 tablet and see for ourselves what it has to offer.
