HP is taking the limelight once again, but this time, its not because of a new product release or something, but because of the reports that its one-year old CEO Leo Apotheker was already “fired” by the said company. Apotheker was hired in November 2010 and since then he has trimmed down the company’s sales forecast and also initiated some strategic overhaul that only created a doubt on the part of the other shareholders on his credibility. Leo Apotheker has managed to maintain a low profile as HP’s CEO, but he has also made other plans as well like killing WebOS and spinning of its PC business in the near future.
Apotheker took over HP as CEO and succeeded Mark Hurd who was also ousted because of a sexual harassment case in 2010. However, because of what happened to Leo Apotheker, HP shares were reportedly falling to almost half. HP remained silent about it. Apotheker became a part of HP for almost 10 months. And according to some reports eBay CEO Meg Whitman is being considered to take over Apotheker’s position as CEO.
Meg Whitman previously run as California governor, but unfortunately she was not able to make it. In addition to this, she is also one of Silicon Valley’s most well-known executives in spite of the mixed legacy at EBay and has helped in reshaping online commerce for small businesses. Apparently, there were some analysts that believed that Meg Whitman will not be able to solve HP problems, but former HP CEO named Mark Hurd might do the job.
Mark Hurd made some violations while he was the company’s CEO, which included the misrepresentation of his travel expenses reports and has also been reported to have a relationship with a contractor that violates HP’s Standard of Business Conduct. However, after he was gone, things went differently on HP. In fact, the company has not gone well after Mark Hurd left HP and they are attributing this loss to the lack of patience of Leo Apotheker when it comes to hardware.
HP seems to have some problems to its organizational structure that affects the performance of HP stocks. In addition to this, no one is also aware of the company’s status in the future- whether it is coming or going. Apparently, there were some people who believe that Hurd’s return to the company will be of help and would take an image makeover that the industry has never seen in a long while.
Whoever becomes the company’s new CEO, whether it is Mark Hurd or Meg Whitman, let us just hope that everything will be fine with HP.
Update: As expected, Meg Whitman is now the new CEO of HP and she will takeover Apotheker’s place starting today.
