Thiniest, lightest, fastest, practical, modular, innovative and Cheapest too? (We hope)
These are just some of the tag words for Modu, currently hailed by Guiness World Records as the “World’s lightest handheld mobile Phone”.
Excerpt from Guiness’ website:
Lightest hand-held mobile phone
The lightest mobile (cell) phone is the modu, which weighs 40.1 g (1.41 oz). It is manufactured by modu ltd. (Israel) and was launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on 11 February 2008.
The good news is that it will soon be available in Philippines via Globe Telecoms. The Modu cellphone was manufactured by an Israel Company of the same name, Modu Ltd. So, are you wondering how small this mobile phone is? How about its features? Let’s find out!
Small is powerful
In case you have an iPod Nano, this Israeli mobile phone is smaller and weighs only 1.5 ounces (40.1g). Exact dimensions are (72mm x 37mm x 7.8mm). How small is that?
Basic features
As tiny as it looks like, a Modu phone is a functional mobile gadget with the basic features such as:
- Ability to send/receive SMS
- Speaker
- Bluetooth
- MP3 Player
- Minimum 1GB of storage
- Can act as mass storage USB Flash Drive
There is more than meets the eye
But that’s not the end of it. This mobile phone’s functionality can be somewhat be “upgraded” or extended if you like by inserting it on special Modu “jackets” or add-ons. As Modu CEO Dov Moran explained:
It is truly the smallest and lightest phone in the world, but the idea is that most of the time you will not operate it by itself but within the jacket or within a ‘Mate
To emphasize what Mr. Moran said, modu gave birth to “modular” phones, “transformers” phones or “Make-your-own” mobile phones. The jackets could function from being a standard phone to a car radio, boom box, GPS tracker, the possibilities are just endless.

Price and Availability
There are no exact news yet when it will hit Philippine markets nor its exact price. Some blog reports said that a Modu Basic phone with 2 Jackets cost around US$200 (10,000 Php). The Israeli company also revealed that in the future, Jackets will be available somewhere between US$20-60.
We will surely wait for any updates on this phone. The modular phone concept was an awesome idea, a phone that suits your needs and personality. We are hoping for the best. You’ll never know, this might be the “revolution”/ watershed in mobile phone history.
