The Barbie doll seems to be the most successful doll ever produced. As a proof, the Barbie doll has already celebrated its 50th birthday last year, which only means that it has been a part of every girl’s life for more than 50 years now. Barbie dolls was invented by Ruth Handler back in 1959 and was manufactured by the American toy company Mattel Inc. Over the years, the Barbie doll has evolved from being the simple skinny blond doll to what it is today.
Mattel Inc. has released many variations of this Barbie doll and some collector items as well. And just recently, a Barbie doll wearing a diamond necklace has been sold at an auction held at Christie’s New York for a stunning amount of $ 302,500. Apparently, an anonymous bidder made this bid for a Barbie doll wearing a strapless black evening dress that comes with a choker that has a one-carat square-cut pink diamond created by famous jewelry designer Stefano Canturi.
There were some who expected a higher bid for the said Barbie doll, however, the amount paid for it was still the highest at all times. According to BBC News, the previous world auction record set for a Barbie was made back in 2006 when a Barbie was sold for $ 17,091. A very expensive doll isn’t it?
However, let us not forget the fact that all the money earned from the sale of the doll goes for a very good purpose. Apparently, all the proceeds of the said auction will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in order to help breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is considered one of the most common causes of death of women so it is very nice to know that there are auctions like this that was created for such purpose.
The Barbie doll seems to be a timeless creation and as time goes by it will surely continue to be a part of every girl’s childhood. And now that the Christmas season approaches, we are pretty sure the Barbie dolls will continue to be among the popular gifts that most parents would buy for their little girls.
