According to a very reliable source, Motorola through its dependable business partner Verizon is set to unveil another amazing phone on August 23, 2010. It’s the Motorola Droid 2, which is anticipated to be the first mobile phone to ship with Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system.

As of present, Motorola is running Android 2.1 and still on the process of finalizing the details before it will be upgraded and ship with Android 2.2 version as it penetrates the market on August.
According to Droid Life, who got a chance to have some pictures of the upcoming Droid 2, this product is expected to be launched with the following specifications:
- Comes with a 3.7 inch WVGA display
- Runs in a 1 GHz Ti OMAP 3630 processor
- Wi-Fi tethering
- Comes with an 8GB internal memory
- Pre-installed with an 8GB SD card
- Has an updated landscape-oriented keyboard
- Equipped with a 5MP camera but has been upgraded to perform more quickly
- New version of Motoblur
- Has no HDMI port
- Has no front facing camera
- Has a GPS receiver
Motorola Droid X and Droid 2 have almost similar software and hardware features but still maintain its own distinct character. Nothing much has changed on its exterior except for its silver colored upper bezel and its redesigned keyboard. The keyboard still comes in 4 rows, but the directional pad was removed giving room for larger keys. Each key also was raised which is favorable for typing or entering text.
The Droid 2 almost doubled the frame per second as compared to the original Droid even they have the same GPU as a result of some GPU benchmarks. It appears that Droid 2 has an edge as compared with Droid X when it comes to software features but basically the same when it comes to its hardware.
Some people may get confuse with the arrival of Droid 2. They may find it hard to choose between the original Droid X and the upcoming Droid 2 by just looking on its external appearance. It’s just matter of choice. But if you are looking for a device which is more centered on its media application, I can say that the Droid X would be a better option.
If you are already a Droid owner and looking for a new phone, the Droid 2 may be a good option or you may just opt to wait for the future phones to be launched by Motorola. Verizon has not yet formally announced the launching of Motorola Droid 2 and the price for this unit has not yet been decided (Androidandme claimed that it might be priced at $199 with a 2-yr contract) . Watch out for future updates.
