If you’re bored at the office doing nothing, we have a good news for you. NES (Nintendo Entertainement System) emulator can now be run on your web browsers without using emulators. Thanks to a clever guy by the name of Ben Firshman.
Firshman ported the NES emulator, VNES (Virtual NES), into a Javascript now known as JSNES. Some of the games you can now run include: Contra, Donkey Kong, Mario, Super Mario, Pacman, Lemmings, Legend of Zelda and Tetris. Other games are nearly working, like Super Mario 3.
Chrome 3 wins
Yesterday, we featured the new version of Chrome 3 and the optimization Google made “under the hood. Remember the core of the new Chrome? Yes, it’s SPEED.
Now, you can see for yourself what does 150% increased in javascript loading really means. Since JSNES runs solely on javascripts, the optimized browser of Google runs the game “smoothly”. Here are the screenshot comparisons of loading the same game between Firefox 3.5 and Chrome 3.
Firefox 3.5 vs. Chrome 3
As you can see, at Firefox the game runs at less than 5 fps (frames per second) compare that with morethan 30fps of Chrome 3. That’s HUGE difference.
At 10 fps or below, playing these games would only cause you a “sored eye” instead of satisfaction . If you love to reminisce your childhood, install Chrome 3, it’s absolutely free of charge. You don’t need to replace your beloved browser, besides it’s nice to have a “back-up” in case your good old browser isn’t working “good” anymore.
Are you excited to play? First, you need to know how. It’s very simple.
How to play?
1) Visit the JSNES website. There, you need to select a ROM for the game you like to play. For example, DOnkey Kong.
2) Wait for the game to load (it might take a few seconds). Then, follow the control buttons designated for each player
3) You can adjust the screen size by pressing CTRL “+”/plus or press CTRL while rolling the scroll wheel of your mouse. Play and enjoy the games as long as you like for FREE.
The game also works “thoretically” on other web browsers like Apple’s Safari 4 or IE 8 but as the author, Ben Firshman puts it “they’re hardly playable”. He highly recommends the new Chrome.
