Movies always have outcomes or endings as dictated by the script. Ever wondered if you can control a portion or a part of a movie? Our fellows at Neurosky and Triete Labs seem to be trying to do just that with MyndPlay. Both collaborated on MyndPlay which allows the power of one’s (viewer) mind to control the outcome of a movie.
MyndPlay is a multi-platform media player which utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) brain computer interface (BCI) technology. The technology permits the user (viewer) to control the visual content by influencing, interacting and directing the plot and outcome. All of these are done using the viewer’s mind. In the simplest sense, MyndPlay uses NeuroSky’s mindwave headset with a custom video player that monitors mental activity during critical points in specially designed films (hybrid movies) and offers multiple outcomes depending on focus and relaxation levels.
At the Game Development Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, NeuroSky demonstrated MyndPlay using the little game/movie Paranormal Mynd in which the viewer plays as an exorcist out to stop a woman from choking to death. The little game/movie banked on viewer’s focus since it had an effect of preventing and letting the woman choke to death.

According to its website www.myndplay.com, it is set to be officially launched on March 14. There are also words that MyndPlay Pro will be released for the regular folks (users) who want to develop their own MyndPlay style. It is a tool which enables users to shoot, share and script sequences. These individual projects are to be sold between $0.49 – $1.99 per episode (cost would also likely depend on length and content). No word was given yet on how much MyndPlay Pro would cost. The mindwave headsets by the way sell for $99.
