There are rumors circulating that the iPhone 5 will have a better (higher resolution) camera. Well, it seems that the information could be true. And the evidence can be traced from Sony!

Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO, had an interview with Wall Street Journal. There, he mentioned that Sony factories in Sendai, Japan were heavily damaged due to natural calamity that hit the country last month. He further said that this damage will cause probable delays in shipment of camera image sensors to Apple. That statement somehow confirmed Wall Street Journal’s assumption early last year that the new iPhone 5 will most probably be supplied with an 8 megapixel camera by Sony instead of OmniVision – which has been their regular supplier.
It was reported that OmniVision had encountered several delays in production to supply the necessary camera parts for the next version of iPhone and iPad. If you remember, Apple has been getting its camera circuits from Omnivision – such as the 5MP unit for iPhone 4 and 3.2MP for 3GS. Many were surprised with this move. Then again, business is business. If one manufacturer cannot deliver, the customer will find a replacement. In this case, Sony has the capability of providing the same camera technology as Omnivision.
And thus, we’re expecting a Sony Exmor R sensor (similar to Xperia Arc) installed in the next-gen iPhone. However, we’re not sure if that will be included in the iPhone 5 units launching this Fall. We’re crossing our fingers.
