If you happen to love both Kinect and your PC, chances are you will be happy to know that Microsoft will be releasing a Kinect for Windows in the early part of 2012.

We do know that the Kinect was originally made for the Xbox 360 but Microsoft has said that there will be a new Kinect hardware specifically designed for Windows. This hardware takes off from the existing Kinect from Xbox.
Microsoft did some work by optimizing components and adjusting the firmware. This made it to the Software Development Kit (SDK) and runtime and eventually the hardware will deliver what customers are looking for in the Kinect.
Some of the changes made include shortening the USB cable and the inclusion of a small dongle. Both were done to improve its relationship with other USB peripherals. The new firmware also enables the depth camera to see objects as close as 50 cm in front of the device and the accuracy and precision wasn’t even sacrificed. The so-called “Near Mode” will open a new class for “close-up” applications beyond the living room as this was the product of consultation with concerned developers and companies in the Kinect for Windows pilot program.
Everyone would be excited by 2012 as we are all eager to see what the device/contraption would look like. At the moment, no details are available on price.
