Most people think that Nokia is simply a popular brand of mobile hand held phones, but little do they know that this company’s trade is not at all focused on manufacturing cellular phones. Ovi Maps, a part of the Ovi brand of the internet based online services by Nokia, is a free mapping product and services for its mobile phones and/or smartphone multimedia devices. Nokia maps, as the Ovi Maps was previously known, initially encompassed a free download of the smart2go applications. Later, Nokia acquired the services of NAVTEQ Corp. (a Chicago, Illinois-based digital map supplier). From this acquisition, The Finnish multinational company was able to further improve the Ovi Maps.
The models of cell phones (which as of January 31, 2010) that are equipped with free and latest version of OVI Maps navigation features include Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, E52, E55, E72, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5230.
What’s even better is that the Ovi Maps is available free of charge for users in 180 countries worldwide and in 46 diverse languages. The Ovi Maps latest version, v3.03 is featured with driving and walking turn by turn, voice-assisted directions and notifications in 74 countries plus a concurrent traffic data in 10 countries.
The Ovi maps provide drivers with lane assistance, safety camera and even speed warnings. Additionally, pedestrians may use the Ovi Maps to find shortcuts and ambler dedicated zones in more than 100 cities globally as the map shows 6000 3D landmarks. Both drivers and pedestrians may alo find the weather service of Ovi Map to their advantage.
The Ovi Maps may also be downloaded for free and be used in its offline mode should the user choose to do so especially when travelling to far away areas with no network coverage.
