Following our previous report about how Sony’s TOS protects it from paying any reimbursement / refund due to hacking incidents such as the one causing the continuous outage for PSN, here’s a credible comment from Reddit, in which a “moderator” at PSX-Scene has detailed the possible reason of this PSN disruption.
So the problem begins about how hackers managed to fool the security of PSN, making them purchase free (unlimited) PSN content using fake credit card numbers.

To be more specific, this hack was done by installing a rogue firmware on a retail Playstation 3 console (ordinary PS3 unit), and what this does is it tricks the PSN security to think that its a dev-kit which is a part of Sony’s Developer Network. Since it’s mark as “trusted” by the system, it will assume it’s safe and won’t check it thoroughly, paving way for the culprit to download as many PSN content as he wants for free.
If you are a developer, Sony has send a statement that only those 3.60+ debug firmware are currently allowed on the system, and all those older firmware version (for developers) aren’t allowed by the network; Hence, obliging all PS3 developers to upgrade their dev-kits to 3.60+ ASAP.
Likewise, this type of attack is much plausible but there could be other reasons why Sony needs to “rebuild” its system to protect it over an “external intrusion”. Let’s just hope that there aren’t any credit card accounts that have been compromised after this ordeal.
