Google has announced that it will award $20,000 plus a CR-48 chrome-based laptop to the first hacker who can exploit the vulnerability of its Chrome Browser. It will be a part of the annual Pwn2Own hacking competition happening at Canada on March 9, 2011.

Previously, no one was expecting Google to join the contest since Chrome uses the same Webkit that Apple Safari utilizes. The focus of this year’s hacking competition is on browsers and smartphones. Latest Release Candidates from participating browser giants will be showcased such as Internet Explorer, Safari under Windows 7 and Mac OS X as well as Mozilla Firefox. On the other hand, smartphone models that are expected to be in the contest are Dell Venue Pro running, iPhone 4, BlackBerry Torch 9800 and Nexus S.

The event will be organized by Tipping Point and is said to be an annual tradition that give rewards to hackers who can exploit security measures on online browsers. It was said that for a hacker to win the $20K reward, he/she has to find and exploit 2 vulnerabilities in Chrome’s code on the first day and get out of the sandbox. It looks difficult but not impossible nonetheless.
So for hackers out there this is your chance to make a name for yourself in a legal / white hat way. Plus, who can say no to 20,000 bucks?
