Earlier this year, Skype acquired Qik. Acquisition comes with upgrades and this time, the mobile video startup has branched to the Android market. Before this recent development, Qik has already been offering live streaming and chat app on preloaded devices. But now, through the Qik Video Connect, you can now perform Qik tasks on devices that run Android 2.0. Apple fans need not to worry because their iPads, iPhones, and iTouch (with a camera) will also benefit from this upgraded Qik.

Apple and Android users can now video chat over 3G, 4G, and WiFi. Though Qik connect might not be the first to be cross-platform calling capable, it stands out by having its trademark video mail and video sharing. What’s an upgrade without integration? It does so by automatically syncing your phone’s contact list for a lowdown on who’s available for live chat. It is also bulked up with features such as threaded video mail conversations and video mails. For wider connectivity, it also has a social network feature: it notifies you when your friends post your Qik videos via Facebook.

This is indeed a big step for the company’s technology, as pointed out by its co-founder Bhaskar Roy in a techcrunch report. It also achieved more than optimizing Qik experience in multiple devices by bringing the entire technology to the Android platform. The Qik Android App is now available for free this week for iPhone/iOs. It normally retails for the price of $2.99.
